Vegan & Palm Oil Free Easter Eggs

Easter Sunday is only a couple of weeks away so I’ve already started my Easter egg hunt. I’m looking for vegan and palm oil free eggs, or other Easter themed chocolate treats for my niblings (great word – means nephews and nieces), husband, daughter and of course myself.

The beautiful thing about dark chocolate appears to be it very rarely contains palm oil! But if you are unsure which ingredients to look out for, check against this useful list from Palm Oil Investigations.

LUSH excuses continue

We know LUSH have confirmed that their Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), Stearic Acid and Sodium Stearate are the only ingredients they cannot fully trace the sources for and so could be palm oil derivatives.

I asked:

I appreciate you say you’re working on getting information from your suppliers, but you said that in 2009 when you released the palm oil free soap base. If after 6 years they still can’t tell you what’s in their products, why don’t you find a supplier who will? Otherwise, without knowing what’s in it, and where it’s from, there’s more than a small risk it’s from conflict palm oil. Why not just find a supplier who fits with your ethical stance and will guarantee source? Continue reading LUSH excuses continue

Getting clean of palm oil

I was reluctant to spend a lot of money on Orangutanuary. Not only am I out of work (to be a SAHM), but it’s just past Christmas. I also have a shed-full of cosmetics just sitting idle and it all seems such a waste.

I tried the homemade alternatives for keeping clean. I washed just with water, and tackled my hair with baking soda and apple cider vinegar. I exfoliated with coffee grounds, made my own deodorant and moisturised with coconut oil. I avoided makeup for all but one day so far this month. And I’ve stretched the eco-cleaning to the house, using baking soda and vinegar to clean the kitchen and bathrooms. I’d love to say I love this new me, but I can’t! I need products! Hallelujah! It can be done!

January 12th 2016 – I cracked it; a complete palm oil free day. Shameful and shocking it took me 12 days (35 years?) to get there. Here’s how I managed it, and still actually lived a normal day. Continue reading Hallelujah! It can be done!

The official LUSH statements

After fighting to get some honest answers on just how palm oil free LUSH really is, I was read this prepared statement over the phone, and then emailed it from the store too.

“Palm oil is a tricky one, it’s a very complicated subject and palm has roots in the most ‘innocent’ seeming of places. It can be listed and sold legally as ‘vegetable’ oil. It’s present as ‘vegetable oil’ in many foods, and the general public can be seemingly unaware that they’re eating it. Continue reading The official LUSH statements

Lush Lies – Trick or Treat

Saying I’m disappointed is not enough. Such an enormous corporation should not be making PR errors like this. Should not be misleading thousands of customers every day. Should not be failing to educate their staff. LUSH is not palm oil free, and need to stop telling people they are! Continue reading Lush Lies – Trick or Treat
